Introduction

Arguments are part of our everyday lives—whether we are convincing friends to watch a particular movie or convincing ourselves why it is okay to spend more money on a particular product. And, whether we realize it or not, we employ certain strategies in creating these arguments to others and to ourselves. Argumentative essays take a position on an issue and defend it, not only by providing reasons for supporting a particular view but also by accurately presenting the views of those who might disagree and refuting those views.

This lesson reviews the elements and strategies of argumentative writing and focuses on how to conduct research and evaluate the reliability of websites. You will be selecting the topic for your paper, finding useful articles that will serve as sources, developing an arguable thesis statement, and learning how to address counterarguments on your topic.
