Competing Views or Complementary Views Assignment.

For this assignment, I want you to develop the ideas we discussed in class. That is, assess the various interpretations about the causes of the Regulation in North Carolina. Be sure to identify the different interpretations. What do you think are the strengths and weaknesses of each one? Does one of the readings seem more persuasive to you? If so, why?

Your papers should be about 3.5 – 4 pages long and comply with the Writing Guidelines. You are not required to use footnotes for this assignment. For direct quotes, simply provide a parenthetical reference: (author’s last name, date), e.g. (Watson, 573). I would suggest you read the pieces in order. For the most part, they are chronological as I think that gives you the best insight into changing interpretations. The exception is the Watson piece: Watson actually does an excellent job of summarizing the interpretations up until 1994 (including a discussion of Whittenberg’s piece). I think this will help you with your analysis.
Alan Watson, “The Origins of the Regulation,” (1994)
Whittenberg, “Planters, Merchants, and Lawyers: Social Change and the Origins of the North Carolina Regulation,” (1977)
Denson, “Diversity, Religion, and the North Carolina Regulators,” (1995)
Chandler, “‘Unawed by the Laws of Their Country’: Local and Imperial Legitimacy in North Carolina’s Regulator Rebellion,” (2016
