Critical Book Review: Indigenous autobiography/memoir
DUE DATE: March 2, 2024
Students will write a 5-page critical review of an Indigenous autobiography/memoir from the list provided in the Brightspace shell. The point of a critical book review is not to simply summarize the content of the book, but to consider its historical merit and to evaluate critically the author’s purpose, thesis, assertions, and methods of analysis. A personal narrative is an account of an individual’s life as representative of larger political, identity, or social issues. The books on the list of options are all personal narratives of Indigenous people, depicting various historical events and eras, and they are all based on lived experiences. This essay is worth 25% of your final mark.
In preparing your critical review, you should do the following:
• Summarize the story being portrayed, including your impression of what the author’s thesis might be. What is the author trying to say?
• Consider who the author is and what his/her purpose might be in writing this work.
• Consider how the author supports his her purpose through the telling of the storv.
• Use direct quotations from the work only when appropriate for demonstrating your argument.
• Cite page numbers from the work, according to the formatting appropriate to the style guide you’ve chosen to use.
If you consult other sources for information related to both the story and the author who wrote it, including material from the course, you must cite these sources in your footnotes/parenthetical citations.
Evaluate the usefulness of this personal narrative for understanding history.
Include personal reflections where appropriate, but please don’t overdo it.
Critically assess any outside sources that you use, if you feel it is necessary to consult outside sources. Encyclopedia entries (or Wikipedia) are not acceptable sources.
