Write a research paper outlining the definition of “madness” as it is constructed by culture.
Topic: Cultural studies of madness:
Madness narratives are often included in storytelling for the purposes of driving the
plot. Rarely do stories depict multifaceted mad characters. Choose an example of a
story (e.g. a novel, play, film, TV series) that incorporates madness or mad
characters. How, and to what end, is madness included? Is it to make an ethical
standpoint about historical trauma or violence? Demonstrate monstrosity? Provide
comedic relief? What does this reveal or conceal about Mad people’s experiences?
The following list of films CANNOT be chosen as the topic of your assignment:
Joker, Split, Psycho, Shutter Island, Alice in Wonderland, Silver Linings Playbook,
Girl Interrupted, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, A Beautiful Mind
Tips: Literary/media analysis requires close reading of the source. Limit the scope
of the text you analyze: one character, one episode or story arc of a TV series, one
film. Your chosen media does not count as a source for your annotated
bibliography, but must be cited
