Essay topics: The general topic of your essay is the discussion of the themes from the works in the first unit (“The Story of an Hour”, “Desiree’s Baby”, “Killings” and Trifles).

Betrayal is a theme that recurs in several of the stories. How does betrayal influence the characters in the works we have read so far? Use at least three primary sources (and their corresponding secondary sources) in this essay.
Setting plays an important role in the works in this unit. How does the setting of the story drive the action? Use at least three primary sources (and their corresponding secondary sources) in this essay.
Essay purpose/audience:
This is an argument essay for an academic audience in which you will make a claim and support it with evidence gathered from both the primary and secondary sources. You will analyze and contextualize the evidence as you build your argument.
Essay parameters:
Incorporate one quotation from each of three different primary sources and/or their secondary sources into your 3-4 page essay. You should have at least 5 quotes in your essay.
Make sure that each of your quotes is properly cited (parenthetical citation).
Do not merely summarize the source; make sure that you are making a point about the story!
Use MLA format for headings and citations.
