What is the value of using photography to understand historical events like the Great Depression?

Create a photo essay that tells the story of the Great Depression through a specific theme. You will need to select a series of photographs (minimum of 15) that you think best expresses your chosen theme from the Farm Security Administration Photographic Archive. Your goal, through your photo essay, will be to convey the unique human experience of the Great Depression, as well as the incredible resilience and determination that Americans faced amidst such adversity.
Step 1: Decide on your theme. You can select any theme you want, but here are some ideas to get you started.
Step 2: Look through the following website: Farm Security Administration Photographic Archive. Sit back and enjoy the ride – because you will spend quite a bit of time here – there are 175,000+ photos!
BE AWARE! The Farm Security Administration’s photographic unit was taken over by the Office of War Information once we began mobilizing for war. DO NOT use war effort photos. Use only Great Depression photos. That means your photos should fall within the 1935-1941) timeframe. Don’t use photos from 1942-1945. That is NOT the Great Depression. If you use photos from 1942-1945 you won’t get credit so be careful!
Step 3: Select a minimum of fifteen (15) powerful photographs that you think best represent the theme that you selected for Step 1.
Step 4: Create your photo essay!
Minimum requirements:
Title page that identifies your theme (first slide)
Introductory statement (second slide) discussing the theme and how the photos will support it (150+ words)
Fifteen (15) or more photos
One (1) photo per slide/page
Each photo must include a unique caption (1-2 sentences)
Each photo must include the date it was taken (make sure it is 1935-1941!)
Each photo must include a link to where you found it
Reflection statement (last slide) discussing what you just did. What did you think of the assignment? What is the value of using photography to understand historical events like the Great Depression? (150+ words)
Step 5: Turn it in!
Important: Your photo essay must be submitted as a PDF (.pdf). You can created it in any program you want, it just needs to be saved and submitted as a PDF. Examples of good programs to use include PowerPoint, Google Slides, and Canva.
