Comparison and/or Contrast Assignment (Academic Argument)
This comparison and/or contrast essay is an academic writing activity. You should avoid using first/second person pronouns in your essay (for example, “I”, “we” and “you”), expecially when expressing your opinion (avoid ‘I think that’ or ‘I believe that’ etc.). Clarify your meaning and be specific. For this essay, I provided several possible sources for you to use as supporting evidence. You must compare and/or contrast two of the given sources (see requirement below). A minimum of four citations (either direct quotes or paraphrases) is required – please review the Seneca Libraries APA 7 Citation guide for how to incorporate these quotes/paraphrases. You must carefully construct your essay with a strong structure – it is very easy to get off track with a response paper! Remember to include all the main components of a strong essay (thesis statement, topic sentences, supporting evidence, and conclusion) by using an essay outline to help you plan your response.

Instructions:
Write a multi-paragraph essay (a minimum of 4-5 paragraphs, 600-700 words) that includes a thesis statement with at least three main points of comparison and/or contrast, and a strong conclusion and that is in APA 7 FORMAT.
Use the Point-by-Point pattern in your essay structure. (SEE COMPARE/CONTRAST ESSAY NOTES FROM WEEK 6)
DOUBLE-SPACE your essay. (SEE APA 7 FORMAT)
Organize your support in advance, and proofread carefully for grammar, spelling and mechanics. You will lose marks for poor language skills.
Use specific support from two sources in your essay. If you use a quotation, make sure you analyze and properly integrate it (DO NOT simply insert a quotation and move on).
Remember to include in-text citations for all of the evidence you use, and a Reference page at the end of your assignment that lists the two sources you are using.
Remember that your comparison and/or contrast of the sources should support your overall purpose/thesis. Ask yourself: What are you arguing in this essay? Why are you comparing and/or contrasting these two sources?
Sources:
You must compare/contrast one of the two TEDtalks found in Week 4 – specifically, the one you DID NOT use for your infographic – with one of the articles from Week 6.
As noted, I WILL allow you to substitute the TEDTalk or article from the Week 6 Supplemental folder.
Topics (Choose ONE):
Compare and/or Contrast the speaker’s/author’s use of logic, emotion and credibility. Which piece is more persuasive and why? While this is your opinion, remember that you are writing this as an academic argument.
Compare and/or Contrast the speaker’s/author’s observations of how languages change and why it’s important that neologisms spring up.
Note that Topic ONE is more in line with our short writing activities, and will likely prove to be easier – only select 2 if you are looking to challenge yourself.
