Your introduction should accomplish the following:
Grab your reader’s attention with a hook
Introduce your topic (make sure you fully explain concepts that are not considered “common knowledge”)
Establish relevance of the issue – help your reader see the importance
Give your research question and thesis statement
Give a road map, or general approach, for your essay
Things to avoid in your introduction:
Using quotes or paraphrased material (unless it is functioning as a hook)
Using a quote in the introductory paragraph tends to disrupt the flow and weaken your argument by relying on another work so early on in your paper.
Opening the paper with a discussion of the nature of the universe.
Don’t start your paper with huge, sweeping statements about the world. Cut to the chase. What material are you engaging? Who is making what arguments? What do you have to say about those arguments?
