It is often heard today in political discourse that, “America is a Christian nation. We also hear that the United States is not a Christian nation and religion and government should be separated. When we examine the historical record from the 1780s to the present, we find that reality is far more complicated. In the 1780s we find there was pluralism in what the founders thought, going into the 1800s we find that there was still pluralism in beliefs but that protestant Christian language came to dominate how people thought about slavery and other issues, into the 20th century with the growth of immigration from other nations we have seen a increase in non-Christian belief systems and the rise of unbelief. At the end of the day, we can neither dogmatically assert that America is or is not a Christian nation. Because of the massive numbers of beliefs, we find in the nation, across its history, we must ask, “according to whom?”
