Write a research paper explaining why Abraham Lincoln declared the Civil War to be a war to save slavery as well as to reunite the Union. When the Civil War began, Abraham Lincoln’s overriding aim was to restore the Union and NOT to bring about an end to slavery. In his First Inaugural Address, in March, 1861, Lincoln signaled his willingness to support a constitutional amendment that would guarantee the right of slavery where it already existed in the southern states. Yet less than two years later Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, effectively making the war a fight to end slavery as well as to restore the Union.
Why did Lincoln decide to issue the Emancipation Proclamation and make the Civil War a war to end slavery as well as to restore the Union?

In your answer to this question you will want to analyze how Lincoln’s views on slavery evolved over the course of the war. What were his views on slavery and African Americans generally when the war stared? What were his early policies on African Americans in the so-called Border States and what was the role of African-Americans in the U.S. military at the start of the war? How did U.S. policy change over time on the issue of how to deal with slaves that ran away or found themselves in territory controlled by Union troops? In general, how did Lincoln’s attitudes and policies on slavery change over the course of the war and what social and military factors lay behind these changes? In answering this question, be sure to discuss how developments on the battlefield may have influenced Lincoln’s thinking.
The analysis in your essay should be supported by ample specific cited evidence from EACH of the following sources:

For citations from the textbook you can use either the author’s name or the title of the book, for example, (Foner, p. 56), or (GML!, p. 56). For citations from video segments, you can use the name of the video, preferably with a time stamp, for example (500 Nations, 00:53).
