You will analyze “The Tell Tale Heart” by Edgar Allan Poe and write a literary analysis essay in relation to the work. Your essay should include the theme of the work and at least six (6) literary devices used. The analysis essay should be between 750-1000 words in length. The format should follow MLA requirements, which can be found at the Purdue Online Writing Lab (OWL.) You must include at least one instructor-approved source. Include quotes, in-text citations, and a Works Cited page. The essay will be graded using the rubric below:
1. Proper MLA formatting: (up to 10 points) MLA 8th edition formatting is followed properly in the essay.

2. Theme of the work stated and explained (up to 10 points) The writer states the theme of the literary work discussed. The author explains the meaning of the theme in their own words.

3. Six Literary Devices stated and explained: (up to 30 points) The writer provides at least six literary devices used in the literary work and gives examples of each from the text.

4. Audience: (up to 10 points) Does the writer employ strategies, tone, and content appropriate for the audience? Does the writer use formal tone?

5. Organization/Development: (up to 10 points) The writer presents the essay in an organized fashion and keeps the reader from being confused or lost during the telling of the remembered event.

6. Good Paragraphs: (up to 10 points) The body paragraphs of the essay begin with clear topic sentences, remain unified, use transitional words and phrases among the sentences to create coherence, and are themselves sufficiently developed. The writer gives proof from the text and explanation in each paragraph. The body paragraph ends with a summary sentence in the author’s own words.

7. Spelling and Punctuation: (up to 10 points) The writer avoids errors in spelling and punctuation.

8. Sentence Structure and Grammar: (up to 10 points) The writer writes sentences with no errors in style, grammar, or sentence structure.
