Explain what organization you have chosen, and why you have chosen this group.

As you have learned in this module, civic engagement benefits your community, and also benefits you as an individual. Service learning is a chance for you to apply and practice what you have been learning.

For your final project for this course, you will engage with service learning by researching a nonprofit organization of your choice. You will then share what you have learned in a presentation in the final course module.

Part 1: Choose a Goal

To get started, we will use the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, which provide a blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. These goals are a call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and improve the lives of people all over the world.

Review the goals, and choose one to support in your service learning project:

The goals are: No poverty; zero hunger: good health and well-being; quality education; gender equality; clean water and sanitation; affordable and clean energy; decent work and economic growth; industry; innovation and infrastructure; reduced inequality; sustainable cities and communities; responsible consumption and production; climate action; life below water; life on land; peace, justice, and strong institutions; and partnerships for the goals.

Part 2: Research a Nonprofit Supporting this Goal

Next, you will choose and research a 503c organization that also works to support this goal. Remember, a 503c organization is a nonprofit, charitable organization, such as Big Brothers and Big Sisters of America or Habitat for Humanity. Look under the nonprofit tab of the OCC LibGuide.

There are national organizations as well as local organizations:

There are local organizations here in Ocean County
Some organizations are nation-wide
International examples of organizations in Egypt
Once you have chosen an organization, take a look at its website. Search for them on the OCC library site or reach out to an OCC librarian for support. Take notes on what you learn.

Part 3: Summarize Your Findings

In a written summary, share what you have learned:

Provide which Sustainable Development Goal you have chosen.
Explain what organization you have chosen, and why you have chosen this group.
What are the objectives, goals, mission, and vision of the organization?
What challenges or problems is this organization facing?
Write a justification as to why this organization needs additional support, and include details about the kind of support it needs to meet its goals.
