Hill Collins, P and Sirma Bilge. Intersectionality, Polity Press, 2016

Purpose: This essay is your opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of gender as it intersects with ability, age, class, ethnicity, race, or sexuality. Your essay will address a social movement of your choice. Your essay will be 1200–1500 word research essay.
“When it comes to social inequality, people’s lives and the organization of power in a given society are better understood as being shaped not by a single axis of social division… but by many axes that work together and influence each other. Intersectionality as an analytic tool gives people better access to the complexity of the world and of themselves” (193).
Hill Collins, P and Sirma Bilge. Intersectionality, Polity Press, 2016
Directions:
The essay will be an academic research essay, properly cited using MLA style for in-text and Works Cited.
The essay will present extensive evidence to support a clear and focused thesis.
Please do NOT ask for the ‘minimum’ number of sources you are expected to use in your research. This is a major assignment in a 3rd year course, your research is expected to be sufficient to cover the topic in both depth and breadth. That said, it will use the 5 materials from your Annotated Bibliography, at at least 3 materials from class (videos or readings – PPT would be in addition to these 3, if you use any PPT).
The essay will use an intersectional approach to consider gender in a contemporary or historical social movement.
Follow any feedback given to your Proposal and Annotated Bibliography.
Please go through the grading rubric and the GRSJ Essay checklist-1.pdf Download GRSJ Essay checklist-1.pdfbefore submitting your assignment.
Please submit your assignment in either PDF or doc. format (pages and google docs do not work well, and text entry does not allow you to format properly)
DUE: Friday, March 15th. (Late assignments will be reduced by 10% per day, up to a max of 50% off. Assignments will not be accepted after 2 weeks have passed since the due date.)
