Select two literary works we’ve discussed in class and write a comparative essay (1,000-1,400 words) that explores their engagement with some of the course’s key themes and interpretative lenses. These may include animalization, personhood and subjectivity, intersectionality, the animal as Other, narrative voice, showing vs. telling, free indirect speech, animals as metaphors and allegories, and the gaze. Incorporate at least one theoretical text from our syllabus in your analysis. You can use the theoretical source in different ways—develop its views, critique its stances, consult it to position your argument in the critical conversation, but not as mere evidence for the soundness of your argument.

limit plot summaries of the chosen literary texts to a few sentences. Focus primarily on presenting original interpretations of the texts. Feel free to build upon some of your reading responses if you find them relevant. Remember to provide direct evidence from the texts to support your claims, including brief, relevant quotes.
