What mechanisms might you use in planning to avoid setting up a similar situation?

In our assigned readings, you read a brief article
identifying 15 common defense mechanisms. As you read through the article, did
you start to consider how you see these common defense mechanisms in your
professional and personal life? Grohol (2016) noted that most of these defense
mechanisms are unconscious, and we do not realize we are using them in the
moment. Still, I would suggest that careful analysis of defense mechanisms and
how we perceive human behavior, especially in controversial environmental management
projects, may help us achieve a more cordial and peaceful management outcome.
Skim back through the 15 common defense mechanisms listed.
Now select at least one of them and relay a story you have experienced in your
professional life that demonstrates the selected defense mechanism. Which
one(s) did you observe? How was it used? Please be sure to change any names or
details that would be inappropriate to share and remember we are in an academic
setting, so some language or expression may need to be edited. Your target
audience is professionals in the field of environmental policy and
management. Please make sure to change
names when describing your experience (if personal in nature).
After identifying the defense mechanism(s) displayed and
explaining its use, explain how this relates to environmental management.

For
example, do you see how this particular situation may arise in a stakeholder
meeting, during public comment or at a field site? What mechanisms might you
use in planning to avoid setting up a similar situation? You may also want to
present related remarks in response to your classmates’ thread.
As you can imagine, we should see a wide variety of topics
in discussion this week. Please write the name of the defense mechanism(s) as
the first word(s) in the title of your thread and follow it with a brief
descriptor of the story/application.
