we had an assignment asking us what we were interested in writing about and this is what I said: Something I have always been interested in/ curious about are fraternities. I am constantly shocked to hear how awful the pledges get treated while they are in the phase of hazing. I feel like hazing is the most outdated, dehumanizing concept that is normalized in society today.
One area I would like to look at is the phycological aspect. I think it’s worth investigating the fact that people undergo these hazing rituals and submit themselves to physical and mental torture just to be accepted and belong in a group. Hazing is just an exploitation of basic human needs for social connection. Individuals join fraternities for a sense of community, friendship, and identity.
I want to look into psychological theories like social identity and group conformity.

Social identity theory says that people get self-worth from their position in a social group and will do a lot to maintain their group identity. Hazing rituals test individuals’ commitment to the group, but also force members to do unspeakable things. Group conformality theories will support the claim that individuals engage in hazing because of pressures to fit in and conform to norms. If all your friends at college start the hazing process to join a frat, it is easy to feel compelled to also, even if you personally find the practices morally wrong. The fear of rejection is a powerful motivator.
I also want to investigate the history of hazing and find out how and why these traditions came about. I want to look at the effects of hazing on individuals’ mental health and emotional well-being. I will give real life examples. My research question can be something about the ethics of fraternities.
