Healthcare providers must balance cultural respect without making assumptions of an individual’s cultural norms. There are times when culture may affect the choice of patients’ treatment plans. That is why it is so important to used shared decision making and provide individualized care. Culturally competent care consists of Write a research report on community preferences in language use based on discussion.cultural awareness, knowledge, and respect (Stubbe, 2020). Cultural humility consists of providers recognizing their own biases and appreciating other cultural differences (Stubbe, 2020).

Negative language can be damaging to the patient-provider relationship. Patients should feel valued, regardless of their situation. For example, patients may feel less inclined to seek assistance with substance use disorder if they have experiences within the healthcare workers labeling them a “drug addict” or “non-compliant”. Substance use disorders are urgent public health concerns as they affect family life, finances, relationships, and many other aspects of patients’ lives. The stigma of “drug addiction” or “drug dependence” can create barriers to care that a patient may desire or need (O’Shay et al, 2023).

Terminology is constantly changing, and healthcare providers have a responsibility to use non-judgmental language. Providers may not always know the correct terms to use. Approaching vulnerable populations in a positive manner while still providing objective findings may make a drastic difference in patient outcomes overall (Sanchini, 2022).
